Yep, we're kinda in the dumps just like you. Jeremiah and Aaron went light on recap and focused more on some of the bigger-picture frustrations that are making the Sounders so little fun to watch. Consider this a venting session.

Susie also sticks around for a second segment where we talk about the imminent sale of the Seattle Reign to a group that includes the Sounders.

If you've been following MLS at all in recent years, you've probably encountered Joe Lowery's content. He's one of the most prolific and articulate analysts covering MLS these days, appearing everywhere from The Athletic, MLSSoccer.com, and the Total Soccer Show. He also has his own budding site, Backheeled.com, where he's collected some of the most interesting voices in American soccer. As you've probably heard, we recently created a partnership with him that gives Advocate members of Sounder at Heart free access to Backheeled.com. Joe and Jeremiah talked a bit about the partnership.

They also discussed this week's Sounders opponent, the Colorado Rapids and how they're offseason transformation is going.

I’ll admit, I was not quite ready for the 2023 season to end. A season that had once been virtually left for dead had come roaring back to life over the last couple months and I had sorta talked myself into the belief that this season was destined to end at MLS Cup. Maybe not actually lifting, but at least making a valiant charge, maybe even with Nicolas Lodeiro and Raúl Ruidiaz putting in a couple notable performances along the way. Nothing I saw against LAFC totally dissuaded me from believing that outcome was at least plausible, but the 1-0 loss at least means it’s no longer possible. If I’m to pull back a little, I suppose the final game was rather predictable. The Sounders played reasonably well -- I think you can even say they outplayed LAFC -- but couldn’t convert their chances, while LAFC made the most of theirs. Maxime Crepeau is a big reason why the sounders couldn’t convert, but the decisive factor ending up being the most predictable thing ever: Denis Buounga racing down the left wing and firing an absolute laser past Stefan Frei. Much to our chagrin, the Seattle Sounders will be playing a Game 3 of their best-of-3 series after falling to FC Dallas 3-1 on Saturday. The match started off pretty much disastrously, with Dallas getting two goals inside 20 minutes.

To their credit the Sounders played much better over the next 70ish minutes until a Jackson Ragen giveaway allowed Dallas to score an ultimately meaningless insurance goal. During those 70 minutes, though, Jordan Morris looked about as good as he’s ever looked, scoring one goal, having another waved off for a questionable offside and just giving the Dallas defense all sorts of fits.

There was also a penalty not given despite VAR’s recommendation and a few other good chances for the Sounders to equalize. All in all, a disappointing but hardly disastrous result. We discuss.

The Sounders ran their unbeaten streak to 10 games and took a 1-0 series lead over FC Dallas in the first round playoff series. They got goals from Albert Runsak and Jordan Morris, a 12th career playoff shutout from Stefan Frei and generally looked about as good as they’ve looked all year.

I still don’t quite know how to feel about this three-game series, but I know winning your first game is a lot better than losing it!

The Sounders closed out their regular-season home schedule with a 0-0 tie with the Vancouver Whitecaps. I think we can fairly say the Sounders had the better chances and certainly had more of them, but it would probably be a stretch to suggest they deserved much more than they got.

Defensively, they were stout and limited a very dangerous Whitecaps opponents to just four shots, and only one each from Brian White and Ryan Gauld. Offensively, though, it was a lot of half-chances without too many clear-cut ones.

The point was good enough to keep the Sounders in third place, but they’ll likely need some sort of result in their season-finale against St. Louis to maintain home-field advantage in the first round. It also closed the books on what is now officially their worst-ever home record over the course of a season, albeit one in which they allowed just .65 goals per game (the fewest they’ve ever allowed).

When Hugh Weber was officially announced as the Seattle Sounders’ new President of Business operations there was an awful lot going on. The team was deep into the process of updating their visual identity; preparing to open a new training facility that would also house the business side; and had just unveiled their new shirt sponsor Providence Health.

Things have settled down a bit since then, but are getting ready to ramp back up. On Tuesday, the Sounders will unveil that new visual identity and they’re now just months away from officially opening their Longacres training facility.

Last week, we had a chance to meet with Weber to discuss all of these things as well as things like the Sounders’ interest in exploring the possibility of building a stadium at Longacres; how their relationship with OL Reign could evolve; the status of some of the promises around the Providence sponsorship; and learned that the team is currently enjoying very robust season-ticket renewal rates while also taking a record number of deposits on new ticket packages.

A limited version of the interview is available here or wherever you normally get podcasts delivered. There’s also an extended version that’s about 20 minutes longer that is only available to paid subscribers, which you can become for as little as $19/year

One of the most interesting people in the Seattle soccer scene is undeniably Wade Webber. The Tacoma Defiance head coach is from Federal Way, helped the Sounders win two A-League titles, played several years in MLS, became a high school history teacher and helped run Washington Premier before joining the Sounders as an academy coach.

For the last three seasons, he’s headed Defiance, overseeing easily their most successful stretch during their nine seasons of existence. The Defiance have now won back-to-back Pacific Division titles in MLS Next Pro and have a chance finish with their best-ever regular season with two games remaining.

During our interview, we discuss some of what is behind the Defiance’s success, learn a bit more about Sam Adeniran’s departure, get a scouting report on Braudilio Rodrigues and navigate some cat issues.

In the subscriber-only portion of the interview, we also discuss the improvements Reed Baker-Whiting has made this season, the emergence of Snyder Brunell and get the story behind the banana bread phenomena.

For a half, all was seemed good in the Sounders world. They were flying around the field, scoring goals and beating the Timbers at home. They took a 2-0 lead into halftime that easily could have been 3-0, but just as importantly were making the plays they needed to make to keep the Timbers off the scoreboard.

We all know what happened next. Léo Chu picked up what I still insist was a pretty soft second yellow card, the Sounders went down a man and the Timbers came roaring back to tie the game and ultimately claim a point.

Jeremiah and Aaron unpack it all and come away with some very mixed feelings.

It has been far too long since we have recorded after a win. In fact, it’s been nearly two months since the sounders last won a game, a streak they finally ended on Wednesday in very satisfying faction when they beat Austin FC 2-1 on a 90th minute Albert Rusnak.

In fairness, the Sounders were the beneficiaries of some fortunate VAR decisions, but give them credit for putting themselves in position to take advantage. Both goals they had were well taken and they did a good job of limiting Austin’s chances. I think you can even argue that they had as many and as good of chances as Austin, if not better.

The Sounders did all this while rotating fully half their outfield players. Dare I say it, but this win felt … important? Let's discuss!

There's been a lot of talk about what's going on behind the scenes with the Seattle Sounders. To help us get to the bottom of that, we asked Niko Moreno to join us. As you might imagine, it's not all rainbows and unicorns but possibly not as messy as you might fear. It's also becoming apparent that the players are aware that change is on the way and how some of them are positioning themselves for their next moves.

My hope is to do this podcast every Monday and every morning of a gameday with the intention of sort of seting the table for what just happened or what we expect to happen.

For today’s episode, I’ll be doing a quick breakdown of the Minnesota United match, giving a quick preview of the Austin FC match on Wednesday and looking back on my story about the Sam Adeniran situation

We tried something new with the mailbag episode: Rather than soliciting questions from Twitter, we sourced them from our new Discord server. We were really pleased with the quality of questions and talked a lot about roster building, who might succeed Brian Schmetzer eventually as well as talked a bit about the new minority owners. It went so well, that we think we'll keep doing it this way for at least the next few weeks.

This is also a good chance to promote the Discord server, access to which is limited to Sounder at Heart Supporter tier members and above. There's a lot of fun stuff already being discussed there and you can get in on the action too by becoming a member.

Coming out of a three-week break in which they presumably worked on tactics, got rejuvenated were hoping to start the stretch run off strong, the Sounders instead turned in one of their worst performances of the season, a 2-0 loss at home to Atlanta United.

The first half was especially bad with the Sounders surrendering 70% of possession and getting run off the pitch at times.

Jeremiah and Aaron discuss where we go from here.

We talked about his transition to Atlanta, what he has liked about Leagues Cup and what he thinks of the roster he left the Sounders and Craig Waibel.

That was not what the Sounders needed or were really expecting was it? Coming off a disappointing loss to the Earthquakes, and needing a win badly, the Sounders played much better but still had to settle for a 1-1 tie with FC Dallas.

The Sounders have now not scored more than one goal or won consecutive games at home in about three months. This while playing good by almost all the underlying numbers. Still, the sounders head into the Leagues Cup break not in an entirely awful position, fourth in the West and only one point out of second. We put it all in perspective and assess the Sounders' chances in Leagues Cup.

I am your host Jeremiah Oshan. Joining me today is my co-host Aaron Campeau and of course our producer Likkit.

For the first time in three months, the Sounders are on a winning streak. Sure, it’s just two games but baby-steps people. Win No. 2 came in pretty satisfying style, beating Vancouver 3-2 on the road in a game where they erased two deficits.

They got two goals from Leo Chu and a game-winner from Yeimar in the 91st minute, the first regular-season stoppage time winner since the season-opener in 2020.

The Sounders finally scored a goal at home. It only took 405 minutes, but they did and it was enough to snap a five-game winless run. As luck would have it, they also moved up to second in the Western Conference table thanks to LAFC losing to the LA Galaxy, allowing the Sounders to inch ahead on goal-difference.

The goal, it should be said, was very well-taken. It started with Obed Vargas driving forward to find Nicolas Lodeiro, who worked a 1-2 with Léo Chu, who then found Albert Rusnak for a left-footed finish from about six yards out.

Sure, it came after the Houston Dynamo were reduced to 10 men but we are in no position to be questioning goals at this point.

Is everything fixed? Of course not. But it sure is a lot more fun to talk about wins than a scoring drought.

Give the Sounders this: At least they made it entertaining. The Sounders finally broke out of their scoring doldrums by putting three past Charlotte FC, including a brace from Raul Ruidiaz and another from Cristian Roldan in both of their first starts in about two months. The only problem? The Sounders also gave up three goals, albeit all pretty well taken.

Each of Charlotte’s goals erased a Sounders lead, meaning the Sounders blew more leads in this game than they had in their previous 17 combined (it had only happened once).

In the second half of the show, we discussed Cristian Roldan and Jordan Morris' USMNT call-up, suggest holding the Leagues Cup concurrently with the Gold Cup in future seasons and give our outlook for the second half of the season.

That was not much fun. While the Sounders managed to stop their losing streak against the Timbers and picked up their ninth shutout of the season, the match itself was a pretty massive letdown. Not only did it end in this rivalries first scorless tie of the MLS era, but there simply wasn’t much action. The Sounders only took five shots and the two teams combined for just .6 expected goals. It was ugly.

As someone who has suggested the Sounders’ performances have mostly been better than the scoreline suggests, I have no such defense in this one.

We discussed all that while making some time to talk about the ramifications for Messi coming to MLS.

After a few weeks of disappointing results but some play that was at least decent at times, the bottom kinda fell out in Vancouver. The Sounders started slow and never really got on track in losing to the Whitecaps 2-0, their fourth straight loss against Cascadia Cup opponents.

This one was among the most depressing, not necessarily because of the scoreline but because of how bad the Sounders looked throughout. The fight that has at least always been there was nowhere to be found, there were sloppy passes throughout, a lack of creativity on offense and just some generally uninspiring play.

The guys try to diagnose the problem and see if they can't figure out a way this gets better.

The Sounders seem to have a really annoying knack for losing to teams in really bad form. They actually played reasonably well in this one and created a ton of chances, but is there reason to be worried?

These questions were taken before the Open Cup loss to the Galaxy on Wednesday but are still relevant as they're mostly about the larger MLS campaign. We talk about the Sounders' penchant for "playing down" to opponents; what we think of the Léo Chú-Jordan Morris partnership; and how much patience we should have with Raúl Ruidíaz among other things.

The Sounders came into Sunday’s game facing an opponent that looked all but dead in the water. Sporting KC had gone winless in 10, had only even managed three goals scored and looked fragile enough that an early goal could have completely knocked them out.

Instead, the Sounders conceded a goal in the 4th minute -- the first they allowed at home since last season -- and then another in the 31st minute. That was more goals than KC had scored in any game this season and more than they’d scored in their previous 535 minutes coming into this game.

It was, to put it simply, a really ugly performance.

It wasn’t exactly the result the Sounders were looking for, but considering they had only even claimed a point at RSL once in the past 12 trips to Utah a 0-0 shutout might not be such a bad thing. Utah has been a rather horrific place for the sounders to play and anything that can go wrong usually does. This time, however, it was more of a mundane road draw. That the Sounders also managed to keep a shutout should probably be seen as a bit of a bonus as well.

Coming out of a week that was pretty darn depressing and only seem to get worse as it wore on, the Sounders put together a workmanlike win that should calm any lingering concerns that this season was poised to go off the rails.

A quick recap: First they lost 4-1 to the Timbers, collapsing in a way we’ve never really seen. Then on Wednesday, Raul Ruidiaz goes down with yet another hamstring injury, that night Jordan Morris plays 88 minutes for the USMNT in an ultimately meaningless friendly that ultimately kept him out of startering consideration and then on Saturday we find out that Nouhou was a last-minute scratch due to some migraines. Through about 75 minutes, the Loons made life pretty difficult, setting up shop in a midblock and refusing the Sounders any sort of transition opportunities.

But rather than get over-anxious or settle for a tie, the Sounders found a bit of magic through Fredy Montero and a perfectly hit shot from Albert Rusnak to secure three points.

So, uh, that happened. For the better part of 70 minutes, the Sounders basically controlled the match against the Portland Timbers and looked likely to end their three-game losing streak. But then Dairon Asprilla scored an admittedly impressive bicycle kick, revived the crowd and sent a bolt of energy into the Timbers. 20 minutes later, they were 4-1 winners.

It was the fourth straight time the Sounders had lost to the Timbers, the first time that’s ever happened in the rivalry’s history; the Timbers beat the Sounders by three goals for the second time in three meetings, a losing margin the Sounders have only suffered two other times since the start of 2019; they’ve now outscored the Sounders 11-2 in those four games; and the Sounders gave up more goals in that 20-minute span than they had in their previous 700 minutes this year.

It was not surprising that Brian Schmetzer was about as mad as I’ve ever seen him in the postgame, saying he’s not even sure if the Sounders can consider this a rivalry anymore.

We unpacked the collapse and how the Sounders move forward.

Stumptown Footy is dead, long live Stumptown Footy. As you probably know by now, Vox decided to stop funding most of their MLS sites a couple months ago. Most of them are moving forward in new formats. Stumptown Footy is one such site.

We caught up with Sam Svilar to get the lowdown on their new life as a newsletter (currently parked at StumptownFooty.Substack.com until the URL license switches over) but more relevantly about the state of the Timbers.

Things are not so good in the Rose City, where they come into this match riding a six-game winless run. It's not just the top line numbers that look bad, either. The Timbers' season high for xG is 1.1, a mark the Sounders have topped in 5 of 7 games

St. Louis City SC came at the kings and they missed - big time. The latest to game the throne were flying high coming into the matchup with the Rave Green sporting a 5-1 record, 1st place in the West and sitting above the Sounders. Seattle pulled STL back to earth behind Josh Atencio's first MLS goal (a golazo/a banger/a wonderstrike/rightfully Goal of the Week) and left the visitors wondering what happened after that 3-0 rinsing. Raul Ruidiaz came off the bench and quickly doubled the lead leaving Brian Schmetzer some more sleepless night ahead of the Portland matchup. At least Coach has some things that might help him combat that - the team is perfect at home still and they are back at the top of the West.

The Sounders won their second straight game, again going on the road to beat the LA Galaxy. Again it was Leo Chu and Jordan Morris providing the offense and staking them to a 2-0 lead. This time, however, the Sounders had to hold on for dear life in the second half, narrowly escaping with a 2-1 win.

Still, a win is a win, especially on the road and the Sounders will now be playing for first place this weekend when they host St. Louis City.

The Sounders finally ended their 10-game road winless run in rather emphatic fashion, over-running Sporting KC 4-1 behind four, yes four goals from Jordan Morris. Leo Chu was also credited with four assists, tying a league record, including three primary assists. This was all despite the Sounders giving up an early goal, but the Sounders pretty much dominated the match from the 5th minute forward and now head into this week’s match with the LA Galaxy feeling pretty good about themselves.

The Sounders had a chance to score a statement win against arguably the league’s top team who was playing their fourth game in 10 days and 5th in 15, but ultimately had to settle for a 0-0 tie against lAFC. Watching the game back, though, I was kinda struck by just how good the sounders looked, especially in the first half.

Coming off two resounding wins, the Sounders were dealt a “humbling” loss -- in the words of Cristian Roldan -- when they went on the road for the first time, falling 1-0 to FC Cincinnati. I wouldn’t say it was bad loss, per se, FCC is expected to be one of the best teams in the league this year but it was a bit of a reality check that the Sounders aren’t just going to prance through the league schedule.

They showed a bit of fight and even appeared to get the equalizer until VAR disallowed it, but will head into this week’s match against LAFC looking to rebound.
